What are cookies, how do they work and what can they be used for?

Simply put, cookies are information stored on your computer (and saved by the web pages you visit).

Cookies typically contain some of your settings (Internet browser settings, such as preferred language or address). Later, when you open the same web page again, your Internet browser sends back the cookies that belong to that page. In this way, the website is able to process, and display, information tailored to your needs and habits.

Types of Cookies

Temporary cookies or session cookies
They are removed from the computer after you close your Internet browser. Websites use them to store temporary information, such as items in a shopping cart.

Permanent cookies
They remain on your computer after you close your Internet browser. Websites use them to store information, such as login name and/or password, so you do not have to sign in every time you visit a certain website. Permanent cookies can remain stored on your computer for days, months, and even years.

First-party cookies
They come from a site you’re viewing and can be permanent or temporary. By using these cookies, a website can store data that will be reused the next time you visit it.

Third-party cookies
They come through advertising and other websites (third party), whose code usually refers to the site you are viewing. These cookies enable websites to monitor your use of the Internet for marketing purposes.
